Article – Medical cannabis helps cancer pain and intractable pain

Scientific studies on medical cannabis show how effective it can be for many types of pain

Effects of medical cannabis for cancer patients

“I have had many cancer patients ask about using medical cannabis for control of pain and nausea, a common side effect of chemotherapy,” says Dr. Jacob Mirman. “Many of these patients have had excellent results. The National Institute of Health is a very prestigious medical source and they have conducted a study on this topic. A brief rundown of the study is below.”

Study goals:

The goals of their study were to review the characteristics of patients who received medical marijuana under an ambulatory palliative care program.

This study was a retrospective analysis of patients who were enrolled in the medical marijuana registry through the ambulatory palliative care department at Upstate Cancer Center.

Synopsis of the results:

The study population was 184 patients.

For patients who took at least one dose of medical marijuana, 48.14% experienced an improvement in pain, 44.95% used fewer opioids, and 85.11% had an improvement in at least one symptom. Adverse effects were low at 3.72%.

Conclusion:

It was determined that medical cannabis has an important role in the palliation of symptoms in advanced cancers with few adverse effects.

Effects of medical cannabis on patients with intractable pain

“Patients who have intractable pain and do not have cancer also can be helped dramatically by using medical cannabis,” continues Dr. Jacob Mirman. “To see a summary of a report conducted by the Minnesota Dept of Health, Office of Medical Cannabis, click below.”

“Although it may not be as ‘scientific’ as the two studies referred to above,” continues Dr. Mirman, “the Life Medical website contains hundreds and hundreds of responses from medical cannabis patients who are using it to control pain. Click below to see what my own patients have said.”
